Digestion is the mechanical and chemical breaking down of food into smaller components that can be absorbed into a blood stream, for instance. Digestion is a form of catabolism: a break-down of larger food molecules to smaller ones.
On this website you will find a plethora of information on the Digestive System, cancers related to the Digestive System, and much, much more.
Biology Project: Digestive System
Community Connection
Healthy habits need to be started at a very early age in order to keep it in check the rest of our lives. Our Community Connection was to talk to the third grade class at Riverview Elementary School about healthy habits. We covered the food pyramid, spoke about exercise, healthy eating habits, and why all of that was important. I think they understood all that we were trying to convey about health, and how it pertained to the digestive system and body. Each student recieved a piece of paper with pictures to follow along to what we were saying during the presentation. They also recieved a piece of paper with two recipes on it; ones that they can make by themselves such as mini pizzas and pancakes. At the end of the short presentation, we handed out markers and paper and asked each student to draw a picture of what "healthy looks like." Some of these pictures are below. Over all this presentation went really smoothly, and it was an effective way to connect with the community. I think the students understood what we were trying to convey about health and had a pretty fun time too.
Biology Project
For this project in Biology, the class was split up into four groups. Each group focused on a different system in the human body, ours being the Digestive System. Every group member had a different task that ends up going into the finished project; this website. The tasks that went into our group were:
Kyla- Creative Media 1- Researching what the digestive system is and what in all it does. Became really familiar with this system and what it does for the body.
Cooper -Interviewer- Interviewed gastroantimologists and other people in Durango who have a connection with the Digestive System. He then made a short movie on these interviews.
Cayton- Editorial- Looked at editorials and researched things that might compromise the digestive system, then wrote an editorial on this topic.
Johnathan- Resources and Personal Connections- Summarized various websites about the digestive system, collected personal stories from people in the community who have had colon cancer.
Brodie- Researcher- Researched how different types of beverages can deteriorate your stomach/Digestive System. Conducted experiments on this theory.
Virginia- Creative Media 2- Created a comic strip on Hemochromatosis.
Lily- Overall Website Design and Community Connections- Designed the website that all of our research and project is exhibited on. Organized what our comminity connection was.
