Vince Lombardi

Vince Lombardi was a legend in the world of football. He once said “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.” Although later he regretted saying this when he was associated as a win at all costs couch. Lombardi came to coach the Green Bay Packers in the 1960’s. He led the Packers to winning championship games though out the 60’s. One of the most famous games Lombardi was associated with was the Ice bowl in 1966. The Packers were down 17-14 1 yard away from a touchdown. Instead of kicking a field goal and going into overtime, Bart Starr the Green bay QB rushed for a touchdown giving Green Bay a 21-17 win over the Cowboys. After the super bowl win over the raiders Lombardi retired from Green Bay coaching to become the team’s general manager. Lombardi grew tired of this quickly and went became general manager and part time coach of the Washington Redskins. He led the Redskins to a 7-5-2 winning season. However in June 1970 Lombardi started feeling unwell.

Vince Lombardi likely began experiencing irregular bowel movements and irregular weight loss. He went to the doctor and was diagnosed with colon cancer. The colon is part of the digestive system that helps eliminate toxins and reabsorb water and anything beneficial to the body. It is a muscular tube approximately 5 ½ feet long, it is part of the large intestine at the end of the digestive system. When cancer infects the colon not only does it spread to other organs in the body but it causes blood to be in your waste because your waste has to directly pass though the colon to get to the end of the digestive system. It like most cancer can also cause weight loss and exhaustion. He was treated most likely with chemotherapy or surgery but it was too late, he died on September 3rd, 1970. There has been some advancement in the fight against colon cancer since the 70’s, one of which is screening against colon cancer. Colonoscopies have helped prevent thousands of deaths from colon cancer. Anyone over 50 should get regular colonoscopies to help screen against colon cancer.
